John 1:46 And
Nathanael said to him, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?"
Philip said to him," Come and see." (NASB)
Think about where you grew up – the community in which you lived. I bet there another community nearby that was considered “subpar.” People from that community where said to be backwards. They were the object of ridicule. When we were kids growing up in Shreveport, that was how we viewed Bossier City. In Jesus’ day, it was how the people of Bethsaida viewed the town of Nazareth. In truth, they were both small towns. They were insignificant to the economy and culture of their nation. But the citizens of Bethsaida believed Nazareth was beneath them. You see this thought in today’s verse.
Things can change. Many people, who grew up in Shreveport, now live in Bossier City. They believe it is the place to be. Unfortunately, this has a lot to do with riverboat gambling industry. You can drive through Bossier City and see how much it has changed and grown. Nazareth’s reputation changed – all because of one man. Someone great came from there. His name was Jesus. Have your doubts? Just consider all that He did and said as recorded in the Gospels. Consider the affect and influence He has had on the world – and individual people – for the last two thousand years. Come and see.
