1 Samuel 12:21 And you must not turn aside, for then
you would go after futile things which can not profit or deliver, because they
are futile. (NASB)
Did you ever have a professor who liked to chase rabbits? He or she would start a lecture on one subject. A student asked a question and the answer would take the discussion in another direction. I had one professor who said it was okay to chase rabbits as long as they tasted good when you caught them. I remember one professor who was easily distracted. Some students would intentional point him toward a rabbit. It was a way of ensuring a delay in our tests.
Christians are supposed to be in the pursuit of godliness and holiness. The pursuit brings us in line for God’s blessings. However, it is not unusual for rabbits to jump up and call for our attention. We must be careful not to go chasing them. They will take us down deadend paths. They will take us away from God’s blessings. We must fix our eyes on the things of God. We must stay the course.
